A print monument to a climate-adaptation icon
CONTEXT
Floating Office Rotterdam (FOR) is the largest floating office in the world. Its elegant circular timber construction and climate-adaptive approach mark it out as a pioneering landmark. Together, the developer and architect set out to create a building that is not just sustainable, but also a timeless architectural icon. A celebration of the building in print – itself both timeless and circular – was therefore a logical step. We were commissioned to design the book detailing the story of FOR from conception to completion.
CREATION
We knew we had to create an editorial format that could capture the personality of the building: beauty and circularity in perfect harmony. At the same time, we needed to educate the audience by inspiring and informing them. Every decision in the design of the book was made with the greatest precision and an eye for detail. The singular character of the building is captured in the meticulously crafted compositions of the pages. Clever choices of paper, colour, typography and photography build a sense of calm and quality, telling the full story from idea to design to realization.
IMPACT
The monograph was sent to partners, investors, staff members and other contacts of RED Company and Powerhouse Company. It serves as a unique piece of documentation: a permanent physical record of the complex yet fleeting processes from idea to design to construction.
Tactile
The cover features a dark-blue linen finished with a pearl-grey foil, creating an elegant, timeless aesthetic that reflects the restrained design of FOR itself.
Photography
The concept and development of the building is documented by photographers Sebastian van Damme and Marcel IJzerman, combined with drawings and text to provide a rich layering of imagery and storytelling.
